Mari Vineyards Best in Class Dry Red

Mari Vineyards is pleased to announce that the Praefectus 2012 has won the Best of Class Dry Red wine at the Michigan Wine Competition.

Though there were fewer wines entered than last year, a total of 373 wines from forty-eight Michigan wineries were judged by a team of twenty-five wine experts from around the country, including Master Sommeliers Madeline Triffon, Claudia Tyagi, Kathy Morgan, and Doug Frost, who is both a Master of Wine and a Master Sommelier.

Triffon described this year's collection as "An exciting array, especially the reds. Pinot, Cabernet Franc, Meritage and other blends were very strong." Amanda Danielson, owner and sommelier at Trattoria Stella in Traverse City, echoed Triffon, saying "This year's sweepstakes flights were truly remarkable. It was extremely difficult to narrow down the reds in particular. Go Michigan!"

Food and wine writer Christopher Cook, the competition's superintendent and a judge at several international wine competitions, expressed similar praise for the Best of Class round for the Dry Red wines, calling it "one of the best flights of dry red wines that I have tasted in any competition this year."

The Best of Class award-winners are:

  • Sparkling: MAWBY/L Mawby Tradition
  • Dry White: Boathouse Vineyards 2013 "Dry Dock" Riesling
  • Dry Red: Mari Vineyards 2012 Praefectus
